Press release: Taking charge of my own health

30.05.2016 by Maite Grisard

Andaman7 makes communication between the patient, his family and health care professionals simple and effective.

Belgium - 30 mai - “A patient can forget everything, a doctor must know all”. Yet in real life it is different: an accident or an unexpected illness abroad and you are the one being asked about your family’s health information: are they allergic to anything in particular? What treatment are they following? What kind of medication have they been taking? Are their vaccines up to date? Individuals usually can’t answer all these questions and Andaman7 might very well be the perfect app to solve that problem!

The story

Vincent Keunen founder and CEO of Andaman7 lived that very problem. In 2007, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Three months later, his tenyear old son was diagnosed with bone cancer. For several months, Vincent and his son were treated in several hospitals in Belgium and abroad. Thanks to an excellent medical care, both Vincent and his son are in good health today.

However, Vincent’s assessment of the care process wasn’t completely satisfactory. He could have gone through this journey easier if the medical data was shareable. Most documents exist only on paper and are therefore not easily nor comprehensively transferable between health specialists and hospitals, being local or worse abroad. The world is a village they say?

Anyone should have access to their own medical record and be able to share it with doctors, specialists, home care providers, family members or best friends if they decide so. That’s the challenge Vincent Keunen and his team decided to take on.

Strong with his computer engineering experience, Vincent decided to develop a mobile application that facilitates access to medical information and allows users to share their input among a circle of trusted persons.

Andaman7 in a nutshell

  • The app is available on mobile devices (tablets and smartphones): clear user interface, typing by voice, excellent communication capabilities
  • Andaman7 transforms the medical record into a health record. The patient is empowered and becomes an active part of the care process, updating his record with additional information such as the followup of secondary effects in medication, daily notes, vaccine reminders among others
  • The app shares the data in an easy and highly secured way with all wanted actors of the care process (both professionals and not). The patient keeps a copy on his mobile device at all time

Andaman7 strengths

Collaborative tool: The patient is an active part of the process; he creates a health community around his electronic health record by inviting people who will be able to add information at any given moment through the app. A precise tractability allows Andaman7 to efficiently track who added each piece of information to which record. No information is ever discarded.

Storage: No information is stored on servers or in the cloud. The information is kept on the users’ mobile devices.

Freemium: Andaman7's core is and will remain free. Non blocking additional functionalities will be added later on.

The Synchronized Health Records (SHR) equip health professionals with a powerful medical history

Andaman7 has been developed for both health professionals to manage their health records and for patients to keep track of their own health (and/or their family’s). They can all collaborate together to create a Synchronized Health RecordTM that is as complete as possible and always up to date with the latest information.

"To be able to access immediately a patient’s complete medical history helps doctors make a better diagnosis. Andaman7 is a revolutionary tool for the medical sector. It allows doctors to be closer to their patients. By integrating people’s circle of trust, health professionals have made one more step towards personalization of health." explains Philippe Devos, MD & homeopath.

Many doctors and specialists advise the company in its growth, amongst which Karine Goraj, Director & Vaccine Project Leader, GSK Vaccines, Professor Philippe Kohl, Cardio vascular surgeon, CIO at the University Hospital of Liege, and Philippe Coucke, Quality Manager at the Integrated Oncology Centre of the University Hospital of Liege.

Connected devices and Andaman7

The number of connected devices is set to overcome the human population and could reach 50 to 80 billions in 2020. Among the most popular ones are smart watches, connected scales, electronic sphygmomanometer, or blood glucose meters for diabetics. So many devices collecting tons of data that are rarely used. With Andaman7, all the collected data can be directly integrated in the user’s health record. It’s already possible with any connected device compatible with the HealthKit app built by Apple. If a patient monitors his weight every morning using a connected scale, checks his pulse with a smartwatch, or calculates the number of steps he is taking throughout the day, all that information will be automatically transferred into his Andaman7 and shareable with his circle of trust at will. Within a few clicks only, any health specialists connected to a patient’s health record can have access to a complete history of the patients’ daily parameters.

"Andaman7 gathers all the data collected by connected devices in the patient’s health record. The app stores the data on the patient’s mobile device and makes it easy for him to share them with people he trusts. It’s simple and efficient and it can contribute to save lives" explains Vincent Keunen, founder of Andaman7.
